Our beer is provided by the
Wadworth brewery of Devizes Wiltshire.
Wadworth are
a family run business now owned by the Bartholomew family since the untimely
death of John
Wadworth (who fell off a horse) and the subsequent passing away of
the last line of
Wadworths, Henry his son.

Wadworth
have consistently made a range of fine beers since the 19th Century in their
impressive Victorian brewery in old Devizes town. They have a reputation for
brewing exceptional beers since 1875 and that tradition continues today.
Not only does the Crown Inn serve the well-known
Wadworth
beers but we also have a variety of guest beers at all times of the year. All our
beers are kept well and served correctly and we are currently aiming for the CAMRA casque mark. We keep four real ale pumps
serving good quality cask conditioned beers at all times. Click on the links to the left to review our regular beers.
Please note that not all the beers may be available at all times due to the
nature of real ale storage and the fact that we will put a different barrel on from
time to time. Lager drinkers need not be disappointed by the fact that we keep
Fosters and Stella for the slightly more discerning lager drinkers. We also
have Henry's Seriously Smooth, a smooth-flow bitter for those who like a bitter beer
chilled with a full and creamy head.

Wadworth
Malt 'n Hops
4.5% ABV
In 1992, Malt 'n'
Hops was the first harvest beer produced using undried hops and was unique
to
Wadworth. Since then, the idea has spawned many imitators. Unkilned green
hops used within hours of picking impart a surge of cleansing orange zest
flavours and refreshing bitterness which balances the malt-sweet palate of
this pale harvest ale.
Michael Jackson, The Beerhunter said, "The colour of ripe barley and malty sweet to start, the beer delivers a surge of cleansing flavours and a
late finish of apetite arousing bitterness!" Brewed in September, Malt 'n' Hops uses
exclusively Goldings hops, harvest-fresh from the farm with bitterness units
of 30-35 depending on the harvest. 98.5% pale ale malt and just 1.5% of
crystal malt give the beer a pale golden colour with a rating of 15.

Beer writer, Jeff
Evans described the beer as, "A deep amber, robust but perfectly
balanced traditional English ale with a rich malty body, complex hop
character and a hint of tropical fruit in the aroma and taste. A gentle
'boiled sweet/barley sugar' sweetness blends wonderfully with a smooth nutty
malt and rounded hop bitterness before a dry, biscuity, moreishly bitter
finish".
JCB is matured for seven days in the brewery, prior to despatch.
JCB is brewed from 90% pale and
unusually high (10%) rates of crystal malt. Substantial quantities of
traditional English aroma Fuggles hops (50%) and Goldings hops (50%) are
added both at the start and near the end of the boil to give bitterness
units of 35. A 'tea@ of Goldings hops infused in hot water is added as the
copper casts, further enhancing the hop character. Colour rating is 38.

Strongbow Cider 4.5%
Strongbow is a West Country Cider/Perry drink madein Hereford which has a
lovely golden
hue. Zesty cider apple aromas follow through with a crisp off-dry palate
with modest carbonation and a clean, drying finish. Highly
drinkable. Review by the Beverage Testing Institute. Silver Medal: World Beer Championships. Cider is not only typically
English, it is probably the oldest of our native alcoholic drinks. It is steeped
in heritage and rural traditions, yet by skilfully combining these with modern
marketing and advertising, together with blending styles of cider to match the
taste of today's consumer, plus innovative, eye-catching packaging, Bulmers has
successfully created a modern £1bn cider market able to compete alongside other
long alcoholic drinks, such as lager. A glass of cider, at home, or in the pub
offers outstanding taste and refreshment qualities. It is also a perfect food
accompaniment. Cider really is a versatile drink.

Draught
Guinness 4.1% ABV
Guinness beer uses several varieties (of hops), among which Goldings are perhaps the most
influential. Guinness uses its original
yeast, though this has been selected down from several strains to one, which was
arrived at in about 1960. Guinness is now only brewed in the Dublin brewery
which makes five or six principal
versions of Guinness, in a total of 19 variations, and exports around 40 percent
of its output. All the grain used by Guinness is grown in Ireland. The non-malt grains used
in the domestic product is 25% flaked barley and 10% roasted barley.

Stella Artois
Stella Artois is one
Belgium's biggest selling lager beers Stella Artois pours to a clear pale golden
color, well carbonated, with a beautiful head of rocky white foam. The nose is
fairly clean, predominantly malty, with a touch of grain. The fragrant
Saaz hops typical of classic Czech pilsners are also evident,
albeit to a lesser extent. It’s pretty smooth on the palate, light in
body, with a light but crisp carbonated bite. Overall the flavor is on the
sweeter side, slightly fruity, but balanced well by a delicate but sharp hop
bitterness and dryness. The flavors certainly work better served cold, as a
little sourness develops in the finish as it warms.
